Strategies: Sega introduced Sonic the Hedgehog, a faster, edgier mascot than Mario, backed by the bold “Genesis does what Nintendon’t” campaign. Nintendo held strong with classics like Super Mario Bros. 3.  

Impact: Sega briefly overtook Nintendo in North America, and Hong Kong players debated Sonic vs. Mario in arcades and game shops. This rivalry set the stage for fierce console competition.



🎮 Mid-1990s: Sony’s PlayStation Revolution  


Background: In 1994, Sony launched the PlayStation, using CD-ROMs for larger storage and better graphics. Sega’s Saturn and Nintendo’s N64 followed, but Sega stumbled with high prices and a rushed launch, while Nintendo’s cartridge format limited game scope.

Background: In 2001, Microsoft launched the Xbox, challenging Sony’s PS2 (PlayStation 2) dominance. Nintendo’s GameCube focused on first-party IPs like The Legend of Zelda. Hong Kong players discovered Xbox’s Halo in internet cafes.
